Voice of the City welcomes the Urban Sandbox, an all ages multi-canvassed open mic event that features poets, emcees, musicians, comedians, solo-artists, puppeteers and more.
Dan "Sully" Sullivan curates the show alongside the Urban Sandbox Collective consisting of David Gilmer, Shelley Geiszler Randall, Nate Olison and DJ Seanile. The show is every second Thursday of the month at Voice of the City studio, 3429 W Diversey, 2nd FL back.
We encourage an all-ages audience. One of our goals is to provide a safe, creative space for folks from all walks of life with an emphasis on giving young artists a place to take stage, hang out, and interact with established artists outside of the student/teacher paradigm.
The Urban Sandbox was founded in 2002 by Colin Palombi, Julian Gallo and Dan "Sully" Sullivan. Each month there are 10 open mic slots, a featured poet/spoken word or comedy act, a music act, and at times, a visual artist. Think of the Urban Sandbox as a speakeasy serving up the best in underground art. Here, you'll discover a part of the city not many people are lucky enough to know. The Chicago Reader once described the Urban Sandbox as "Chicago's Best Kept Secret." Come out and experience it for yourself!
