Voice of the City supports multi-arts and collaboration. Many times in academia, artists are encouraged to work within a single form. To work in more than one discipline, artists are told, is to be undisciplined. In this stratified landscape artists of other disciplines rarely interact, nor do their audiences.
Voice of the City believes artists have many facets, interests, and ideas. At VOTC ideas come first, form second. Interaction, collaboration, and trying new things are the norm.
Voice of the City seeks to explore, develop, support, and produce inter-disciplinary visual arts and performance; and to exhibit, display, and/or sell artwork, providing a venue for artists and access to art for the community.
Since October of 2001, VOTC’s on-going performance venue, Vaudeville Underground, has featured the new work of over 70 performance groups, and has contracted over 200 artists. In 2006, Voice of the City launched Circle in the Square: New Works in Dance Theatre with Winifred Haun & Dancers.
Voice of the City has created art in collaboration with various community groups, such as the Haas Park Advisory Council and the Trust for Public Land for the Haas Park Art Board Project. Most recently, Voice of the City was approached by the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce, which commissioned a streetscape mosaic project.
