Teaching Art

Goals & Standards
In offering arts education to the public, Voice of the City’s goals are to:
1) Provide quality fine arts education to Logan Square children regardless of their ability to pay;
2) Allow the arts to enhance the "I am" experience of each participant;
3) Introduce the arts as a vehicle to tell an individual’s or community's story;
4) Foster creativity and imagination as a window of possibility;
5) Expose children to professional art in action;
6) Provide professional, paid opportunities for artists to make and teach art; and
7) Connect artists with their creative center through teaching (and learning from) children.

In order to maintain a high educational standard, Voice of the City ensures that:
1) All artist/teachers are degreed in their discipline;
2) All artist/teachers are trained in setting objectives, lesson planning and establishing effective classroom environments;
3) The curriculum for each fall and spring session is developed based on the goals of the partner organization we serve, IL State Goals for the Arts, and the ideas of the artist;
4) Artist/teachers are given on-going feedback & guidance for weekly classes;
5) Classrooms maintain a 1:10 artist/student ratio;
6) Children are grouped by age level;
7) An on-site supervisor will be present whenever programming is occurring.
