Circle in the Square: New Works in Dance Theatre was formed in the fall of 2005 as a collaborative producing venture of Winifred Haun & Dancers and Voice of the City, with the aim of presenting original work created by a collective of choreographers and their invited colleagues. The producers encourage cross-pollination between performance disciplines—modern dancers collaborate with aerialists, theatre artists use movement, sound and text outside of the standard play structure—and strive to connect the program of work to their respective communities of Oak Park and Logan Square.
Circle in the Square fosters new work in a year-long cycle, beginning with a premiere and then reworking and remounting each piece two or three times. The producers provide avenues for creative feedback, such as preview performances with industry professionals and peer reviews, allowing the choreographers opportunities to hone new work, and giving audiences the chance to watch the work develop.
